Confinement

“This is my most experimental project to date. This is created on 5 feet of foam board using oil paint. acrylic paint, and corded rope. I took inspiration from artists Michaela Stark and Jenny Saville to show the beauty of women and their bodies, and that we are confined to the male gaze in our culture – judging this skin as grotesque. The gold is symbolic of the gilded cage the male gaze puts us in.”

Anya Thompson is an artist based in California studying studio art and art history, specializing in feminist art history and the male gaze. With a focus on surrealistic realism, she likes to make statements that subvert the male gaze and make the viewer introspect on their discomfort using bright colors and disturbing themes.
