Music Video: “Watermelon Lemonade” by Velvet Kove

Shot by Jake Ogden

Astronaut girlfriends, stop-motion and indie-pop — what more can you ask for?

Singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist Velvet Kove has given all of us a Valentine’s Day gift this year: her latest single and music video “Watermelon Lemonade.” Released with Brooklyn record label goodstuff records, the sapphic Valentine’s Day anthem isn’t just for grooving. The song reminisces longingly on the conflicting experience of finding your first queer love, only to be pushed back into the closet by your family’s homophobic values.

The indie-pop ballad makes a strong second single for the Virginia native (following her 2019 debut single, “Hazel-Green”) and further establishes her as capable of crafting love stories out of fragmented, stream of consciousness lyricism and immersing us into her daydreams with subtlety. Lovers of King Princess and Tessa Violet should be sure to add both of Kove’s singles to their yearning playlists. And if the heavenly vocals didn’t send you flying through the clouds, then the music video absolutely will. Directed by Toby Bluntz and animated by Cil Franklin, the music video’s ’80s Super Nintendo space adventure not only heightens the song’s techno qualities and faraway sound, but complements it perfectly with a playful retro aesthetic.
