melting and molting

graphic by lyn enrico

i don’t want the snow to melt / because i don’t want to hear / the full story / i want the mountains of snow to remain / frozen, muffling reality forever / but everything is / temporary / snow melts as fast as you leave, as fast as your lips leave mine when your roommate walks in on us, as fast as i start crying when i listen to columbia river, as fast as i start eating when i’m sad,  as fast as i get up to dance when i hear a song i like at a party, as fast as i add songs to my liked songs (10 seconds in), as fast as a bus to new york city feels / (which isn’t actually fast at all) / as fast i watch eternal sunshine of the spotless mind / (which isn’t actually fast at all) / the eternal is contained / in the ephemeral / when snow melts, it doesn’t die / it just finds somewhere else to live / in the dead grass, in the cracked pavement, in my (supposedly) waterproof jacket, in my gloves / (and in my hands, for that matter) / so i guess when i say everything is temporary, i’m saying that things don’t really die / they just change form to survive / in someone / something / somewhere / else, forever

did you know you’re a shapeshifter?
